North-West University pursues new research opportunities focussing on Dynamic Modelling and Control research. It started with the Pebble Bed Modular reactor (PBMR) project. Specific requirements with regards to active magnetic bearing (AMB) development as well as Brayton-cycle based Dynamic Modelling and Control dominated the research. AMBs was
seen as an enabling technology for the PBMR development due to its oil-free non-contact operation.
